STEAM Literacy & XR Tech (3 of 5): Engineering

Lesson Title: STEAM Literacy & XR Tech (3 of 5): Engineering
Academic Standards:
Content Creator: Mr. Alex Fernandez
Level: High School
Duration: 45-55 min
/  STEAM Literacy & XR Tech (3 of 5): Engineering

Objectives

  • Review engineering terms.
  • Build an engine block.
  • Discover: rapid prototyping, prototyping in VR/AR, and visual coding with blocks on TinkerCAD.
  • Explore a variety of AR resources used in learning spaces.
  • Learn about 5G and Mobile Edge Computing which will change Software Engineering dramatically.

Description

In this lesson we will explore the many flavors of engineering as a skill and a career path. We will explore how coding has evolved and is more visual and approachable than ever before. There will be some review of 3D printing, RepRap, and rapid prototyping. See an example of Coding Blocks using TinkerCAD to program and animate 3D assets using free tools. We will talk about how AR has evolved and where it can go in the next 5 to 10 years. We will discuss how 5G and MEC (mobile edge computing) will allow apps to require less from the device in our hand and utilize the power of the cloud in new ways.

Sequence

  1. Activity - Sticky Notes - List engineering terms or jobs; separate with 2 dashes
  2. Hands on with an Engine Block - Timer or Stopwatch
  3. Rapid Prototyping and RepRap
  4. Learn about tools used to create AR and VR content
  5. See an example of Free Coding Block programming
  6. AR integrations in Western New York
  7. How 5G and MEC will change spatial computing
