Slam Poetry: Power Through Performance (2 of 5)

• Students will identify several poetic devices.
• Students will plan how to apply poetic devices to their own writing.
• Students will describe why they liked certain phrases of a slam poem.
• Students will explain how they will apply similar techniques to their own writing.

In this lesson, students will continue working on their slam poem and use different poetic devices. They will also discuss the ties of poetry to song lyrics/rap.

i.      Personification: when you give an object/animal human-like qualities or

ii.      Simile: comparing two things with like or as

 iii.      Repetition: when poet repeats a word or phrase

iv.      End Rhyme: when the end of two words sound the same

v.      Near Rhyme: when the INSIDE of two words sound the same

vi.      Pun: Multiple meanings for the same word(s)

vii.   Alliteration: when the BEGINNING of two words sounds the same
