  • While on a museum tour, students will be able to describe one or more of the artworks they are seeing according to step one of the art criticism process.

Description

After a brief introduction to the course, students will learn what art criticism is and also learn about the various methods of art criticism. We will focus on Feldman’s 4-step approach to art criticism. Today’s lesson focuses on step one, DESCRIBE. Students will learn to look closely at an artwork without judgment, and they will learn what a credit line is and how to pull identifying information from it. Students will determine how realistic an artwork is, and whether it is realistic, abstract, or non-objective. After the guided portion of the lesson, students will practice describing various 2D and 3D artworks.

  3. Explanation of Feldman's 4-step approach to art criticism

  7. Guided practice in the museum room
  8. Museum tour with additional practice
  9. Wrap-up:  review, questions, preview of next week's lesson.
