  /  German 05 – Common Phrases

Objectives

  • Learn common phrases (please, thanks, thank you very much, you're welcome, excuse me, I beg your pardon, once again please, please repeat, do you speak German/English?, no idea, no problem, one moment please).
  • Learn to ask for the price of goods in a store (shopping language).
  • Describe how one likes food ( I like hot tea/ I like cold coffee).
  • Order food in a restaurant or food stand.

Description

We first learn common phrases used in everyday life, specially in public spaces. We then learn to talk and ask phrases used in a store when buying groceries and simple items. Learning how to order food in a restaurant or food stand on the streets is essential for any traveler that wants to interact with local German-speakers that don’t know how to speak English. This lesson should serve a traveler wanting to buy simple objects on the go, in markets or restaurants.

Sequence

  1. We begin by learning common phrases which usually are great conversation starters ("excuse me, how much does this cost?").
  2.  Learn the basics of shopping language (ask for prices, describing items at the store, understanding costs).
  3. We then learn to order food in a restaurant or at a food stand and describe to the waiter or our friends our preferences (I like hot tea, I want a cold coffee).
  4. Thank students and impulse them to keep learning German.
