/  Design & Engineering for Empathy (4 of 5): The Design Cycle & Innovation

Objectives

  • Students will be able to apply practical and creative thinking skills to solve design problems.
  • Students will be able to develop a range of feasible design ideas which can be correctly interpreted by others.
  • Students will be able to understand the individual parts work together to determine the function and usefulness of a product.

Description

In this lesson, we will build on our understanding of empathy, systems, form and function. Participants will revisit a refugee camp to foster empathy and understanding of displaced people. Then, participants will plan out a piece of furniture that might be beneficial for a targeted group of people within this community by using the whiteboard tools within VictoryXR. Finally, participants will create a 3-d model of their idea by dragging, sizing and moving various 3-d shapes in order to apply their understanding of empathy, systems, form and function.

Sequence

  1. Students will meet in the Industrial Arts room to review our objectives for the lesson.
  2.  Students will be taken on a 360 field trip to another refugee camp to think about what their needs and wants are for refugees and what their environment is like.
  3. Students will look at posters of various kinds of furniture and then move to the whiteboard to draw a piece of furniture.
  4.  Students will then take shapes from their 3D library to design a 3D model of this piece of furniture.  An example will be provided for them along with various shapes on the ground.
  5.  Students will be sat down in chairs and asked some reflection questions regarding.
